Red Hawk Casino draws 10,000 on first day
Sacramento Bee,
Thursday, December 18, 2008 at 11:07:29 AM
The Red Hawk Casino drew a full house Wednesday night as thousands braved the cold, fought traffic and opened tight pocketbooks to check out the state's newest Indian gambling site.
Casino officials estimated that 10,000 people arrived by 6 p.m. The Shingle Springs facility allowed guests in hours earlier than its scheduled 7 p.m. opening in hopes of avoiding traffic backing up on Highway 50 near the casino's offramp. But by 8:30 p.m., eastbound traffic on Highway 50 was backed up about one mile.
Inside, guests queued up at the 2,000 slot machines, squeezed into seats at 75 gambling tables and sampled fare at the casino's six restaurants.

The Red Hawk Casino in Shingle Springs is holding its grand opening today, and South Shore business are seeking ways to compete against and possibly partner with the new casino.
On Tuesday morning, workers were putting in the last few slot machines, stocking Red Hawk key chains in the gift shop and making other last-minute preparations for the casino's opening tonight at 7. Red Hawk Casino is off Highway 50 outside of Placerville, about 60 miles from the South Shore.
Carol Chaplin, Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority executive director, said she met with Red Hawk Casino representatives, and they offered to refer business to Lake Tahoe. "I don't know how it will work, but there's nothing to lose," Chaplin said. "Right now we're talking to properties to see if they want to test the waters."

El Dorado prepares for gridlock on casino's opening day
Sacramento Bee,
Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at 11:12:27 AM
El Dorado County public safety and transportation officials are bracing for some of the heaviest traffic in the county's history as motorists head for up Highway 50 next week for the opening of a new Indian casino.
The Red Hawk Casino is scheduled to open at 7 p.m. Dec. 17 north of Highway 50 in Shingle Springs. But Capt. Bill Donovan, commander of the California Highway Patrol's Placerville office, said officers will begin directing traffic at 9 a.m. at the main intersection leading to the casino.
The primary goal, he said, is to keep traffic moving on Highway 50. If traffic begins to backup, he said, the off-ramps leading to the casino will be closed temporarily and freeway traffic will be waved through.

Casino prepares for fierce gaming competition
Amador Ledger Dispatch,
Friday, October 3, 2008 at 4:47:22 PM
It's been rising for months - steel beams, iron rods and new freeway exits cutting a swath through the grassy hills of El Dorado County.
The Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians is planning to make the Red Hawk Casino a gambling mega-force. With its ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for December - and with the Buena Vista Band of Me-Wuk Indians rapidly preparing to break ground on its own gaming facility near Ione - Jackson's casino may be staring at a future in which it's geographically cut off from every major population area in the region.
The Red Hawk Casino is a huge project by any measure. Boasting six restaurants, 2,000 slot machines and 75 gaming tables, it will be the fifth largest Indian casino in the country and significantly bigger than its Jackson counterpart. More than 14,000 people recently applied for 1,800 jobs at Red Hawk, including former personnel and management from the Jackson Rancheria.
