Del Mar Racetrack ready to run for 75th season Opening Day

Thoroughbred racing is set to return to the Del Mar Racetrack for its 75th season Thursday, kicking off with the 20th annual One and Only Truly Fabulous Hats Contests, and the $100,000 Oceanside Stakes.
KUSI's David Davis and Brandi Williams, and the rest of the Good Morning San Diego cast, will broadcast live from the seaside oval all morning, beginning at 6 a.m.
The hats contest, an opening day fixture in the Plaza de Mexico, features categories like Best Racing Theme, Funniest/Most Outrageous, Most Glamorous, Best Flowers/All Others, and Best Fascinator -- a wool, lace or feather alternative to a hat.

Bingo proposed for fairgrounds to benefit charity

The Del Mar Fairgrounds hosts the county fair, horse racing and a "Scream Zone" for Halloween. Now the state-owned fairgrounds wants to add seven-days-a-week bingo to its schedule.
Fairgrounds officials have proposed offering bingo games -- the kind found at church halls and senior centers -- to generate money for its scholarship fund and other charities.
Fairgrounds Deputy CEO Becky Bartling said bingo could raise about $200,000 a year for charity and build the fairgrounds' customer base.

More than 43,000 fans are expected to flock to the Del Mar Fairgrounds today for the opening of the horse racing season.
One tradition will be in full flower: Women wearing colorful hats. But police hope to eradicate another tradition: drunk driving by homeward-bound fans who have spent the afternoon and evening consuming large amounts of alcohol. In recent years, there have been numerous accidents caused by drunk drivers on opening day, officials said.
